As a result, defining comparative politics in terms of a “comparative” method would make it synonymous with political science itself. If this is the case, it makes one wonder why there are two phrases—comparative politics and political science—to describe the same thing. We believe that comparative politics is best understood as the study of politics occurring predominantly within countries. As such, it is a rather vast field of research.

There has been considerable research in the last few years on authoritarian regimes, and we felt that the topic deserved a stand-alone chapter. In addition to this new chapter, we have attempted to be more transparent about the coverage of dictatorships in other places in the text through new chapter titles and section headings. A second major change focuses on the varieties of democracy. In Chapter 12, we present a slightly modified typology of democracies that focuses on parliamentary, presidential, and semi-presidential democracies.
