Sinagua culture peaked around the middle of the twelfth century, about a century after the eruptions in the mid-1060s of Sunset Crater near Flagstaff. The people who resettled in the area when it appeared to be safe to return found that the layers of cinders and volcanic ash held water in the soil, considerably increasing the yields of their crops.
